It’s been a blockbuster summer for Pharrell, who’s scored huge hits with Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” and 2 Chainz’ “Feds Watching.” In an interview with the “Today” show, the private producer opened about his personal life and the best song he’s written to date.
He met up with fellow Neptunes producer Chad Hugo in band camp. “Most of us were kinda nerdy. Nobody sort of walked in like Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl cool,” said Pharrell, adding, “By the way, all those guys have chauffeurs now, so [they] got the last laugh.”
One third of the songs in his catalog were written in the shower. “I can write pretty much anywhere, but in the shower it’s like really great,” said the 40-year-old, who revealed that Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” came from his shower sessions.
But his biggest hit did not chart. “The best song that I’ve ever co-written was my son,” he said of Rocket, his little boy with fiancée Helen Lasichanh, who he calls his “bestie.” “Every night’s like a sleepover.”
So what’s next for the music mastermind? “Honestly? It’s … more music,” he said.
Aside from music, Pharrell will guest as a mentor on Rihanna’s fashion reality show “Styled to Rock,” which premieres Nov. 5 on the Style Network.
