n his 20-plus years with Harlem Children's Zone, Inc., Geoffrey Canada has become nationally recognized for his pioneering work helping children and families in Harlem and as a passionate advocate for education reform. Joining the organization in 1983, Mr. Canada became the President and Chief Executive Officer of Harlem Children's Zone in 1990. The New York Times Magazine called the agency's work, "one of the most ambitious social experiments of our time." In October 2005, Mr. Canada was named one of "America's Best Leaders" by U.S. News and World Report. In 1997, the agency launched the Harlem Children's Zone Project, which targets a specific geographic area in Central Harlem with a comprehensive range of services. The Zone Project today covers 100 blocks and aims to serve over 10,000 children.

The New York Times Magazine said the Zone Project "combines educational, social and medical services. It starts at birth and follows children to college. It meshes those services into an interlocking web, and then it drops that web over an entire neighbourhood. The objective is to create a safety net woven so tightly that children in the neighbourhood just can't slip through." The work of Mr. Canada and HCZ has become a national model and has been the subject of many profiles in the media.

Dwyane Wade is officially split from his high school sweetheart and wife Siohvaughn Wade. Today, a Cook County judge finalized the divorce, despite Siohvaughn being a no show.


The judge also kept his previous order for Dwyane to have temporary custody of the couple's two young sons. Sioh's ninth lawyer says he's going to appeal.

When leaving the courthouse this morning, Dwyane commented:

"I feel relieved," said Wade, dressed in a dark blue pin-striped suit outside of Judge Marya Nega's courtroom.

But what about a surprise $10,000 check? Or heck, how about one of those iPads?

That's exactly what the entire O: The Oprah Magazine staff received this past Tuesday, reports AdvertisingAge. Long known for her "random acts of kindness" (remember when she gave each member of her studio audience a car in 2004?), Oprah struck again at the Hearst headquarters in NYC to surprise O staffers (no matter how long they'd been with the company) with the gifts in honor of the magazine's 10th anniversary.


"These were personal gifts to the staff from Oprah to thank them for their hard work and dedication to the magazine," a Hearst spokeswoman told Advertising Age, confirming the visit and gifts.

New Dallas Police Cheif's son Shoots Police Officer and Murders another

Lancaster is mourning its first police officer ever killed in the line of duty.

Officer Craig Shaw was a five-year veteran of the force. The 37-year-old had offered to work on Father's Day — even though the devoted husband had a seven-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter.

Shaw was slain as he responded to a report of shots fired at a Lancaster apartment complex on Sunday evening.

The Lancaster Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance will hold a Prayer Vigil at 9 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church of Lancaster, 201 South Dallas Avenue.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Thursday evening at 8 o'clock at the Lancaster Public Safety Facility at 1650 North Dallas Avenue.

Visitation for Officer Shaw is Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Inspiring Body of Christ Church, 7701 South Westmoreland Road in Dallas.

The officer's funeral will take place at the same Dallas church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Sgt. Derek Clark, a longtime friend and fellow Lancaster officer, said he was devastated to learn that Shaw had been killed.

"It kind of hit home for me real hard, because I had just left my son, and now here's my friend — he won't be going home to his son any more," Clark said.

Shaw also served on a regional SWAT team. Those members who served with him gathered on Monday — some wiping away tears — as they learned of his death and paid tribute to him.

The Craig Shaw Trust Fund has been established, and contributions can be made at any local Chase bank branch.

Alicia was chosen to receive the blessing in return for her work with local children's charity Bobbi Bear, whose workers are paid by the singer.
Bobbi Bear director Jackie Bradfield said yesterday: 'Alicia has been made part of the tribal family because she really reached out to the people here.

'Two female priests who practise a mix of Christianity and tribal custom chose new names for her and the unborn child, as a mark of respect. The names were kept between them, but were chosen to reflect Alicia's character.

'Alicia had to do a special dance with drums banging in the background, and was embraced by abused children who she has helped. She was chosen for the ceremony as a thank-you, because she has done a lot to keep children's lives afloat and for us to afford our support staff.

'Her partner came too - he held her hand and helped her sit down when she needed rest.'

Alicia's mother and brother were among a crowd of around 50 people who watched her by the tree where Bobbi Bear runs a weekly HIV clinic.

Manute Bol Passes away at 47

Manute Bol, who became a basketball sensation in the 1980s as a skeletally thin shot-blocking giant with the Washington Bullets and other professional teams, and who devoted his post-basketball life to improving the lot of his fellow natives of Sudan, died June 19 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. He was 47.

His cousin George Bol said Mr. Bol had internal bleeding and other complications from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a rare skin disease that he contracted from a medication he received in Africa.

Mr. Bol, one of the two tallest players in NBA history, was also one of its most exotic and endearing — and surely the only one to have killed a lion with a spear. His unusual journey to basketball stardom began in southern Sudan, where he was a cattle-herding member of the Dinka tribe and never touched a basketball until his late teens. After catching the eye of an American coach working in Sudan, Mr. Bol made his way to the United States without knowing a word of English.
