Doctor’s Office Mistakes You’re Making

Stop talking on your cell phone while you’re in the exam room. Your health is an important thing…the phone call can wait.
Stop lying. From sexual practices to bad eating habits, many patients choose not to disclose the full truth to their physicians. Unfortunately, the only way a doctor can treat you to the best of their ability is if they have as complete a picture as possible about your particular health needs. Stop being so afraid that your doctor will judge you, and start telling them the truth.

Start describing what you’re feeling as accurately as possible. Is your pain sharp or dull? Is your headache more in your temple or towards the middle of your head? These details may not seem important, but they can help your doctor make the right diagnosis for you to start feeling better.
Doctors agree that if possible, you should describe the exact location of your problem, how intense the pain is, what may have provoked it and how long it’s lasted. To help you remember, write down your symptoms, as well as any questions that you may have for the doctor during your appointment.

Start telling your doctor the full reason for your visit. Believe it or not, many people don’t explain to their doctors exactly why they’re there. Even if you have a list of concerns, disclose them to the doctor as soon as possible so that they can plan your visit accordingly.

Start telling your doctor what you expect from them. If you have certain hopes or expectations, such as a particular prescription or getting rid of a suspicious-looking mole. This isn’t to say that the doctor will always be able to deliver on your requests, but at least they’ll have a better idea of how to approach your care and be able to clearly explain what they can and can’t do for you.

Start bringing in a list of your medications and supplements. Doctors would love for more patients to tell them exactly what they’re taking, so that when they’re considering a form of treatment, they have all the information they need to provide a more reliable course of action.

Stop leaving with unaddressed concerns. If you have a question, ask, even if you think the doctor is rushed. If you’re worried your headache might be a brain tumor, say it even if you think you sound like a hypochondriac. You never know what positive impact your questions can have on the success of your treatment.

Start keeping a copy of your medical records. You don’t bring your medical records or images with you. Unless you know for certain that your doctor, particularly a new doctor, has your records and images from another office, bring them with you. Again, having a more complete picture of what they’re working with can help doctors figure out the best way to treat you.

Stop being afraid to disagree with the doctor. Yes, so many people are programmed to agree with whatever the doctor says, but if your doctor suggests you should take a particular drug or see a certain specialist, and you don’t understand why or don’t agree with them, say so. Just nodding your head and then ignoring the doctor’s recommendation the second you’re out the door will not help you feel better. Doctors aren’t mind readers – they want to know what you’re thinking so that they can prescribe a healthy course of action that you’ll actually follow.

You don’t follow through with your treatment plan. If you ask questions, help the doctor paint a complete picture of your health and voice all of your concerns, the result should be a treatment plan that fits your needs. However, all of that is useless if you don’t actually follow it. Even if you forgot your pills, or had second thoughts about the treatment plan, contact your doctor and admit to it, so they can best advise you what to do next.

5 exercises 2 do without a Gym

1) Walking – If you have stairs in your home, go up and down them a few times. Instead of waiting for the elevator, take the stairs. If you take a bus or train, get off a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way. Whenever possible, just walk! It’s a great way to help tone up your legs.

2) Jumping Jacks – This calisthenic exercise works out your shoulders, back, thighs and calves. Start in a standing position with your feet together and your arms relaxed by your side. When you jump, move your feet apart until they are wider than your shoulders, while at the same time raising your arms over your head. Then jump back into starting position.

3) Leg lifts – This exercise can be done from sitting on a chair at your desk. Sit upright in the chair while lifting your legs until they are at a straight angle towards your hips. Lower your legs slowly and stop about 3 inches off of the floor. Hold your legs steady for about 2 seconds and then repeat.

4) Squats – Knowing how to do squats properly can firm up your butt and legs rapidly. Stand with your legs evenly apart while keeping your toes, hips and knees in a straight line. Slowly lower your body as if you were going to sit in a chair, bending the knees. Hold the position for 2 seconds and then return to starting position. Then repeat 10-15 times for an intense work out.

5) Dancing – Besides being lots of fun, dancing has many great health benefits. You will gain flexibility, strength, endurance and a sense of well being just by throwing on your favorite tunes and getting your dance on!

Top 5 Signs She is NOT the One

5. YOUR FRIENDS AREN’T FANS
Even if your friends have horrible taste in movies, music, or people they date, they’ll have a pretty good idea of whether or not she’s good for you. And if they don’t get along with her — or if she can’t stand them — you probably have some serious issues. You can probably sense how they feel about each other, but if you’re not sure, ask a few who’ll be relatively impartial. “Listen to what your friends have to say when you ask their opinion,” he says. “Just don’t let their analysis of your situation be your only basis for breaking it off.” In other words, it should just confirm what you already knew deep down.

4. YOU CAN’T DO NOTHING WITH HER
After the newness of the getting-to-know-you and getting-to-see-you-naked stage fades, the relationship will center on how well you two get along just sharing space and time together. And if doing nothing with her feels like you’re serving hard time, that’s, uh, not so great.

3. YOU FEEL GUILTY ALL THE TIME
Unless you’re truly an awful person, you shouldn’t feel like the bad guy all the time. So if you’re always made to feel like you’re doing something wrong, the real issue is probably either that the two of you are incompatible, or that she has some major issues of her own. Even when you’re made to feel lousy all the time, the thought of ending things can make you feel even more lousy, because she’s cast you as the bad guy. But that’s just going to breed resentment.

2. YOUR SEX LIFE IS LOUSY
It’s surprisingly easy to tell yourself that a less-than-enjoyable sex life is okay if everything else about your partner and relationship is great. After all, it’d be superficial and shallow to put so much emphasis on sex, right? Hell no. In fact, a recent study found that couples in secure and happy relationships have better sex lives than those in insecure, ambivalent, or detached relationships. In other words, a satisfying sex life is a key part of a good relationship.

1. SHE’S AMAZING — BUT YOU STILL CAN’T COMMIT
She’s smart, sexy, and doesn’t get mad when you go to grab a quick drink with your friends and accidentally road trip to Atlantic City on a three-day bender. What a gal! And yet even though you know she’s “perfect,” you can’t visualize yourself with her forever. It’s what psychotherapist Ken Page calls “the wave of distancing,” and it’s pretty common. “You’re with somebody who’s decent, kind, and available — and yet you get bored, judgmental, and annoyed,” he says. “So take a step back and let the wave pass.” Good advice — unless, of course, the “wave” lasts for six months. Then it’s probably not a wave, and either this relationship isn’t right, or you’re not ready for any relationship.

9 Things Men Find Attractive About Women Other Than Looks

Men are visual creatures. There’s no doubt about that. But when it comes to the potential for commitment and anything more than sideways pokey, there are several things we find attractive about women that have nothing to do with looks.

Confidence

A universal winner, but it’s not just about what you say and do. It’s also about what you don’t do. Confident people don’t need to make themselves known for the sake of being seen and heard. They don’t need to proclaim it from center stage at Summer Jam. They don’t need to offer unsolicited criticism and judgments about what others are doing, what they’re wearing, and/or who they’re with. Confident people don’t snoop or question every opposite sex friend. Confident people embrace both their strengths and weaknesses. They’re concerned with controlling what’s in their power, not what’s outside of it. That’s sexy

Sense of Humor

Let’s be real, the type of men you find interesting probably aren’t walking the straight and narrow. They’re not just rocking suits, processing paper, and talking about their education and career accomplishments. They’re probably funny. They know how to make you laugh. And when they see you laughing, they feel good. They think you’re fun. Men love fun women. We also love funny women. We don’t love women who are serious all the time. Because when we see that, it more than likely means we won’t be able to be ourselves. Who wants to be with someone like that? That’s not attractive. It’s a repellent.

Passion

Passion isn’t only infectious, it’s sexy. Men love hearing women speak passionately about the things and people they love (unless it’s about the ex they haven’t gotten over) and their dreams. Passion inspires. And inspiration is one of the key things that drives us toward you, to support you, to love you, and to become better ourselves. What’s even sexier is seeing you not just speak about your passions, but to display it through your actions. Seeing you pursue your dreams with determination is a definitely win.

Generosity

I’m not just talking about volunteering once a month at the neighborhood soup kitchen. I’m talking about generosity when it comes to family, friends, and acquaintances. Someone who’s willing to help others without provocation knows that there’s more to life than their own. We will need that generosity and support to help keep us going when things are going well or not well at all. And someone’s that’s generous is rarely called selfish. Who likes a selfish bear?

Independently Dependent

Contrary to what some people may tell you, men love women that are independent. We love women that have their own careers, can manage their finances, and don’t need a man to feel secure. But we also love the vulnerability that comes with being dependent on someone when necessary. One of the sexiest but least discussed traits is the ability of someone to admit that they need help or to ask for it. You don’t have to do it all, all the time. Men find it attractive when women understand that.

Treatment of Children

As men settle into the stage of life where they’re looking forward to the next chapter with someone special, this becomes more important…which means it becomes a more attractive trait. Most men plan to have kids and we want them to have the best mother possible. So it only makes sense that we’d find a woman that’s good with kids attractive.

Intelligence

You’d think this goes without saying right? Well, unfortunately it doesn’t. Intelligence here doesn’t just mean having a high IQ. It means the ability to carry a conversation about more than gossip, reality tv, and mundane shenanigans. It means being plugged into what’s going on in the world. It means understanding business, politics, and current events. It means reading. Men love women that read more than just magazines (but that’s a start). You can put us onto stuff. You can challenge us. Men love challenges. You knew that though.

Spirituality

Spiritually doesn’t mean going to church every Sunday (or Saturday). What about the other six days of the week? Are you living your life in accordance with what you believe? If you are, that’s sexy. We can see it in your attitude and hear it in the way you speak. Someone who actively believes in something is better than someone who believes in nothing. We don’t even have to believe the exact same thing.

Innocence

Nobody wants to date the loaf of bread that’s been open for 2 weeks. Nah, I’m kidding. Kinda.

I don’t mean innocence in the pure white dress or naivete sorta way. I just mean you don’t come off as having seen and done it all. When we feel that there are things we can show you, it becomes attractive. We like to feel like we’re improving something, even if it’s just in our own minds. You have an active role in that.

There are plenty of other things men find attractive, but these are just nine. Fellas, what additions would you make to the list. Ladies, what things do you find attractive about men other than their cheekbone structure, edge up, and height?

5 Tips For Dropping 5 Pounds By Summer

Celebrity Fitness Trainer and author of 5 Factor diet Harley Pasternak suggests 5 simple tips to lose 5 pounds or more by summer.

1. Be Physically Active All Day
"From the moment you wake up to the time you go to bed, you should be moving," says Pasternak. That means walking up the stairs instead of riding in the elevator, walking instead of driving when feasible, gardening, cleaning anything that doesn't involve your butt being glued to a chair. "At the end of the day, all those calories that you burned periodically really add up," he says.

2. Eat Five Times a Day
"When you graze instead of gorge, you have more control over how much you eat and are less likely to make bad choices," he says. Each meal or snack should include a low-fat protein, a whole grain, fiber, a healthy fat (like olive oil or canola oil) and a sugar-free or low-sugar beverage.

3. Drink Three Liters of Water Each Day
"When you drink enough water, you increase the rate at which you burn calories," says Pasternak. And when you're dehydrated, you can often mistake thirst for hunger, meaning you'll eat more than you would have if you'd stayed hydrated all day.

4. Do Five Workouts Each Week
Combine resistance training with cardio and work up a sweat for at least 25 minutes in each workout. "Make sure your program changes from day to day, in order to make sure your body changes," Pasternak says.

5. Give Yourself a Free Day Each Week
"Indulge in eating a treat such as dark chocolate and sleep in late," says Pasternak. "It will motivate you to keep up a healthy lifestyle during the other six days."

Marriage Won’t Make You Happier

If you’re living with your significant other, don’t worry too much about tying the knot, because it won’t make you any happier, according to a new study. The study followed 2,737 single men and women for six years, watching as 896 of them either got married or moved in with a lover, Science Daily reports. The results? Both married couples and cohabitators exhibited higher levels of happiness and fewer depression symptoms than single people—but married couples didn’t have an advantage over those just cohabitating.

“While married couples experienced health gains—likely linked to the formal benefits of marriage such as shared health care plans—cohabiting couples experienced greater gains in happiness and self-esteem,” the study’s lead author said. “America continues to value marriage above other family forms. However, our research shows that marriage is by no means unique in promoting well-being.” Jezebel’s take-away? “Go ahead and live in sin! Science says it’s okay.” If you’re living with your significant other, don’t worry too much about tying the knot, because it won’t make you any happier, according to a new study.

5 Foods That will Kill your Brain

1) Trans Fat

Look out for "partially hydrogenated vegetable oils." Trans fat alters metabolic processes and hardens your arteries. How much to have? Zilch

2) Saturated Fat

Leads to the buildup of fatty tissue on the inner linings of your arteries and turns on inflammatory genes. How much to have? No more than 4 grams per hour.

3) Added Sugar

Excess sugar causes the proteins in your body to function improperly, aging your arterial system. How much to have? Main dishes and desserts should contain no more than 4 grams of added sugar per serving. Side dishes should contain no more than 2 grams of added sugars per serving. Total should be less than 4 grams added sugar per hour.

4) Syrups

All syrups. Not just that high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) -- the man-made sugar that does the same things as sugar -- all syrups, like all added sugars increase the risk of dysfunctional proteins, obesity and metabolic syndrome. Be wary of maple and malt syrups, as well. How much to have? Stay away! In total, you want to keep you added sugar count to less than 24 grams, or 6 teaspoons per day, and less than (when combined with added sugars) 4 grams of added sugar an hour.

5) Any Grain But 100 Percent Whole Grain

Whole grains contain a lot of fiber, which helps preventing arterial aging. How much to have? Nada. Never have any -- why age unnecessarily? Why forget what your ideal hunk looked like? Anytime you can swap simple carbohydrates for complex carbs with 100 percent whole grain, go ahead

TONI BRAXTON HOSPITALIZED

Toni Braxton is on the mend after experiencing some painful “flare ups” resulting from her Lupus condition. The 43-year-old singer checked into a Los Angeles hospital on Monday. “I wanted to say thanks to all my fans for their support, as I have been experiencing some flare ups with my Lupus which has me in the hospital for a few days,” she told TMZ. Despite the initial scare, she is doing fine. “I wanted to clear the record before rumors started, and will totally be fine as I’m blessed to having an amazing family for support.”
Braxton, who revealed her battle with the disease last year, took to Twitter to assure her fans that she is OK. “Hey guys! I’m sure you’ve heard rumors about me being in the hospital, they are in fact, true. I’ve been here since Monday but I am fine!” she tweeted. “Just a lupus flare up, but I promise you all I am ok! Love you all! Thanks so much for all of your support!”
TMZ explains that Lupus is a condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. It can target different body systems including joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, the heart, and lungs.

7 Ways to get some Me Time

1. Listen to music.
Studies show that listening to the music you like can have a positive impact on your life and happiness. “Plus, music can trigger memories, give a sense of youthfulness and nostalgia, and take people into different places,” says Karol Ward, L.C.S.W., author of Find Your Inner Voice. “So put on your earphones and let those sounds take you from restless to restful.”

2. Start a blog.
Start a simple blog on something you’re passionate about. Blogging is a great outlet for channeling your thoughts while connecting and sharing your interests with others. “I love blogging during my ‘me’ time,” says Sunny Sea Gold, Glamour health editor and founder of healthygirl.org. “The stuff I blog about is body image and overcoming emotional eating, two things that are super close to my heart. The fact that I’m so passionate about it is what makes the writing so enjoyable and therapeutic. That and getting to know the amazing women who read and comment.”

3. Reorganize your life.
Living and working in a sea of clutter can stress you out without your even realizing it. Each week, spend a few hours clearing out your office or reorganizing your apartment. “Cleaning is therapeutic,” says Elizabeth Kari, 21, from Chicago. “It creates order in my life, and I always feel ready to begin the next day with a fresh, clear start.”

4. Take a power nap.
That’s right. Sleep doctor Michael Breus suggests spending your “me” time sleeping. Just a quick 25-minute power nap and you’ll wake up refreshed and ready to get up and go. To get the most out of this time, try spraying a lavender mist on your pillow. “The smell of lavender eases anxiety and helps you fall asleep,” says Dr. Breus. “In the end it’s about the quality, not quantity, of your sleep.”

5, Send your mind on vacay.
Can’t get away? Visualize it! Imagining yourself in a place that has brought you peace and happiness is a quick, free and clinically proven way to cleanse your mind and enhance your mood. “Picture all the sights, smells and sounds of that wonderful spot,” says Amy Spainhower, director of creative services at metime.com, a company aimed at spreading the “me”-time message. “Just enjoy the feeling of pleasure that comes your way from ‘visiting’ your vacation destination

6.Make an appointment with yourself.

Whether you’re at home reading a book or giving yourself a manicure, scheduling your “me” time is imperative. The key is to make this time a commitment you have to honor, just as you would any other appointment or meeting.

7.Exercise.

Do as the Obamas do: Pick a time each day to work out and stick to it. The physical and mental health benefits of exercise are endless, and it’s the perfect time to spend refocusing, unwinding and concentrating only on you. Plus, you’re not multitasking during Pilates.

Traits Attractive Women Look For In A Man

No.10 Intelligence

Flaunt this trait at your own peril. Intelligence can be very attractive to beautiful women, but only if used in the right way. In other words, a way that’s humble and interesting. Use your intelligence to surprise an attractive woman with off-the-wall, fun ideas, fantasies and unexpected things, and you’ll charm her. Formal education, however, is only attractive if it’s used in this interesting way. If you’re an expert in an area that’s cool, present it from an “I know a lot about this, let me show you” perspective, and not an “I’m so smart and you’re not” angle. Also be aware that some attractive women are actually intimidated by a man with a deep education, so step carefully.
No.9 Challenge
No doubt about it: Attractive women are used to being held up on pedestals and pursued by men all day long. So, if you want to stand out from the 1,000 other guys who hit on her all day long, challenge her. If you act indifferent and aloof to beautiful women, if you make them think that you’re only calling because you’re bored, and act almost disinterested sexually, they’ll often do their very best to get your attention. Again, this drives attractive women crazy — it practically makes them obsess over a guy — even though they’ll never admit it.

No.8 Attentiveness
This one goes hand in hand with No. 9: More than gifts and compliments, attractive women want to know that you’re thinking about them. Even if you just tell a woman that you don’t like it that she’s out with another guy, she’ll love it, because it means you were thinking about her. Remember: A beautiful woman doesn’t wear that sexy outfit by accident. If her hair is done nicely, it wasn’t a fluke. Women are very impressed and attracted to men who notice these details. Plus, it’s much more powerful than listening to her complain to get your attention. Right?
No.7 Generosity
This one’s your secret weapon. Attractive women can get almost anything they want in life from men, so don’t try to impress them with gifts. Impress them by showing that you spend your time thinking about the welfare of others. Make a donation, help out someone less fortunate, donate time at a soup kitchen, and invite her along to see you in action. All of this will send her heart a-fluttering. And by the way (and much more importantly), you’ll be doing good for the world too.
No.6 Sexual mastery
What do I need to say? Women love sex just as much as men do. But just like everything else in life, a great lover is not easy to find. Women become instantly addicted to skillful lovers who know how to make them feel ecstasy and teach them new ways of feeling incredible. So read some books. Watch some “educational” movies. Do whatever it takes to get some moves down.
No.5 Romance
Most guys think it’s obvious, but here’s the real fact: Romance is powerful for creating attraction in a way that goes way beyond the whole prince-on-a-white-horse routine. Learn how to come across as the kind of man who knows how to connect with a woman emotionally and you’ll be golden. Instead of just looking at the surface of a woman, look within her to find the beautiful parts. Use your imagination to see opportunities for poetic comments, interesting stories, fascinating history, and emotional interpretation to everything, and you’ll sweep her right off her feet (and into bed).
No.4 Dominance
OK, big fella, listen up: It’s a scientific fact that attractive women have an unconscious attraction to “dominant” men. In fact, the dominant males in some primate groups account for up to 75% of all the matings with desirable females (while less dominant apes go home and watch Skinamax alone). Same goes for humans. Attractive women love men who know what they want and go after it. But, I’m not talking about the kind of assertiveness that makes her feel intimated or uncomfortable, or oversteps her boundaries. I’m talking about the kind of assertive stance that’s all about setting a goal and then going after it with passion. Women get turned on by that kind of dominance.

No.3 Class
If you show just a touch of class and culture (in other words, not so much that it’s boring) attractive women will pick up on it fast. So what exactly is “just a touch” of class? Well, maybe you know something about different types of wine or foreign movies. Do you understand something about fashion? Do you like Frank Sinatra? Maybe you enjoy exotic foods. How about opening doors for her? All of these are good for serving up just a “touch” of class without being a bore.
No.2 A sense of humor
It’s true; humor is an aphrodisiac to attractive women. If you can keep her laughing, everything will go your way no matter how you screw up otherwise — all because attractive women are magnetically drawn to men who crack them up. Now, this is a tough one to explain to some guys. Many men take this to mean being overly arrogant, which is not what I mean at all. I suggest you watch Pierce Brosnan in The Thomas Crown Affair, Clark Gable in Gone With The Wind or Tom Cruise in Top Gun, to get the idea of the kind of humor I’m talking about. The Cocky & Funny trait is really mild overconfidence combined with an awesome sense of humor. It drives women wild.
No.1 A sense of fun
This is the big one: Absolutely nothing is a bigger turn-off to attractive women than a buzz-kill. All women — especially the most attractive ones — are looking for men who like to have fun and do adventurous, unusual, even dangerous things. It’s instantly intriguing. It’s immediately enticing. It’s an escape from the humdrum of every day. Women will absolutely obsess over a genuinely fun guy who flirts a little, shows them a good time, and then doesn’t call the next day. So remember: Predictability is attractive to some women — ones looking for a husband. But when it comes to choosing their next date, fun wins out every time.

Tips to Zap Stress Before it Happens

1. Being stuck in traffic. There are few feelings as frustrating as being in traffic that has come to a dead stop or is crawling along when you need to get somewhere in a hurry — your child’s school, your office, or a doctor’s appointment. You can’t anticipate an accident on the road, but you can do some advance planning to avoid stress:

* When possible, avoid scheduling appointments during peak traffic hours; when that’s not possible, give yourself twice the time to get to your destination.
* Research alternate routes or adjust your work schedule if leaving home 15 minutes earlier, for instance, can help you avoid traffic. And if you do get stuck, keep in mind that while you can’t control the traffic, you can control your reaction to the situation: Use your time constructively and reduce stress by listening to an audio book or practicing deep-breathing relaxation to prevent frayed nerves. If you’re going to be late for a meeting or appointment, call ahead to explain what’s happened rather than keeping someone else waiting. The person on the other end of the phone will probably be more understanding of your predicament than you expect.

2. Arriving on time. To reduce stress from being late, plan for unforeseen delays and give yourself extra time to reach your destination. If you arrive early, use the extra minutes to freshen up, get organized, return a phone call that you thought you’d have to delay, and delight in the fact that you avoided the stress of cutting it too close!

3. Meeting a deadline at work. It may not be uncommon for your boss to ask you to complete a project on short notice. You can use this opportunity to flounder or shine. Being organized in general can help make a pressing deadline a little less stressful. Practicing good time management skills will also reduce stress when you’re crunched for time. Consider writing out a concrete to-do list or making a schedule to help stay on track even when a major deadline is looming. Taking these methodic steps will increase your confidence level and help you avoid stress.

4. Making a presentation. Many people become anxious about giving a presentation whether it’s at work, a PTA meeting, or in front of a volunteer group. Taking the necessary time to get ready, though, can help you avoid stress. Plan ahead so you have plenty of opportunities to prepare, review, and give a dry run in front of a friend or your spouse — if you feel confident about your knowledge of the material, you will reduce stress. If you’re feeling nervous, relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing before, during, and after your presentation, can help slow your heart rate and make you feel calmer.

5. Arguing with friends, family, or coworkers. It’s normal not to always see eye-to-eye with those around you. Even so, a disagreement doesn’t have to become a stressful confrontation. When you approach your loved one or co-worker respectfully — and recognize that you are each entitled to your own opinion — and having different opinions doesn’t have to change your opinion of one another. If it seems like an argument is spiraling out of control, take a deep breath and step back from the situation. A brief time-out can help both of you keep things in perspective.

6. Having a financial problem. Planning for potential financial issues ahead of time can help you reduce stress. Focus on building up your savings, consider taking an additional job if necessary, and stick to a reasonable budget. Living within your means and replenishing your savings account can help significantly reduce financial stress. If you do find yourself in a financial bind, seek out the advice of a financial counselor who can help you deal with creditors and find ways to cut your bills.

7. Waiting in line. Lines always seem to be longer when you’re in a rush. Unfortunately, waiting in line is another stressful situation that you can’t control, but you can anticipate and plan for by shopping at off-hours and online. If you’re pressed for time, put off tasks, like going to the post office, where there’s likely to be a long line. Look for stress-free ways to get your tasks done; using the U.S. Postal Service, it’s now possible to mail almost anything from home — you can print out postage and even request a pickup. Use self-checkout aisles at stores; they’re often less crowded. And if you have no choice but to wait in line, take deep breaths, think of something soothing, and simply try to let your stress go (but don’t give in to that impulse candy purchase!).

8. Get stress out of your head and on paper
Writing in a journal every day can help you release thoughts and emotions that are causing you stress. Write from the position of an observer, recording your thoughts without any judgments. Just write it down so that you can see clearly what is going on inside. The next step is to identify the source of any anger or stress so you can begin to make changes. Looking into your thoughts give you the opportunity to gain insight into your feelings and reflect the underlying issues.

9.Suppress stress with positive thinking
Instead of letting your thoughts run wild with anxiety, say affirmations to yourself, such as “I can handle the tasks I have ahead of me. I enjoy my responsibilities and fulfill them well.” In fact, repeating positive affirmations can actually suppress the cortisol that the adrenal gland releases in times of stress - leaving you peaceful and calm.

10. A Retreat to Avoid Burnout
Overloading your brain is a recipe for stress and health problems. Information overload is particularly harmful at midlife because we have less tolerance for stress, which can contribute to high blood pressure and heart disease. Press the “reset” button on yourself. Give yourself a retreat from the stresses of modern life. Take one day out of the seven-day week to minimize “screen” time. Don’t watch TV, don’t check email, and don’t look at the news - it will be there tomorrow, and after a day of rest, you will be refreshed and ready to look at them.

Careful planning and a change in your overall attitude can also go a long way toward reducing stress … and what a relief that will be!
